Nikolai, the Only Bear
Nikolai, the Only Bear
by Barbara Joosse, Renata Liwska

Awww, poor Nikolai! This is the story of the only bear in a Russian orphanage. He sort of but not completely fits in there, but no one seems to want to adopt him. The illustrations brilliantly show the emotions of loneliness and outsiderness that Nikolai feels. He doesn't talk and doesn't act the same way as the other children. Until, one day, a very special couple from America take a chance on him and adopt him. They love him like he's special as well, and slowly he learns to speak and such. It's an adorable story and a wonderful metaphor as well.
