Kisses for Elizabeth: A Common Sense Approach To Alzheimer's and Dementia Care
by Stephanie D Zeman MSN RN
Full disclosure: this book was written by one of the writers in my writing group. However, I bought it not just because I know her but because it was a book full of entertaining stories. You would think that a nonfiction book with such a long title would be boring and medical. That couldn't be further from the truth!
The book is structured around fifteen "common sense" type tips for caring for people with Alzheimer's and Dementia. Each tip is stated, explained briefly, detailed through accessible stories, and then summarized. Each story begins with a related quote and then shows an experience Stephanie had during her many years working as a nurse. The stories are easy to read and entertaining. Some made me tear up. Some made me laugh. Some made me worry. But they all taught a lesson or two. It's easy to remember many of the tips just by remembering the stories.
By the end of the book, one thing is clear: there is no one thing to expect when dealing with people who have Alzheimer's or Dementia. Anything could happen, but in order to handle the unexpected, it helps to just use common sense. This book can be read by friends, family, and professional caregivers alike.
