Astonishing X-Men Volume 3: Torn TPB
by Joss Whedon, John Cassaday
Wow. Just when I think this series cannot possibly get any better, it does. OMG. And in proper fashion, this volume answers a ton of questions (finally we find out which mutant is "responsible" for bringing the end of the world, and we find out what's up with Emma and the Hell-fire Club) but really doesn't answer anything at the same time. LOL
It's brilliant, though. This is without a doubt my favorite X-Men series of all-time. The dialoge is fantastic but the story itself is amazing. I really like Kitty/Peter. And though Logan's obsession with beer is kind of strange and Beast being a cat is also kind of strange, I otherwise loved every second of this. The twists and turns took me totally by surprise. I was amazed and exclaimed out loud many times over.
I love the concept of Emma with guilt over her past (and damn right she should have a lot of it) and all the little visual clues like that inscription on the statue on the side of one frame were great touches. But it was great seeing their deepest fears playing out. I especially liked Cyclops' because it's so emotional and tied to his already strong angst. Awww, Cyc! I love the way they were all completely incapacitated and overwhelmed by their fears in one way or another. And it was great seeing how they were able to break out of it.
The side plot about the end of the world is fine, but I'll believe it when I see it. I'm sort of in denial; I'm sure the X-Men will save the day in the end ;-) I'm happy to go along for the ride. Bring on volume 4!
