The Boxcar Children
by Gertrude Chandler Warner
I read this book dozens of times as a child, as it was one I owned and as I enjoyed it a lot. There was something exciting about children venturing out on their own and making a decent go of it from raiding the dump for dishes to getting a guard dog to making a little pool for bathing and swimming. I loved watching them find the boxcar and make it a home. I loved Henry working to take care of his siblings. I loved how they all looked after each other. I loved the kind adults who made sure they were okay without interfering in their adventure. And I loved the happy ending!
I was worried it might not hold up now that I'm much older, but it was just as magical to go along with these four children on their journey as it was when I was a child.
