Mouse Guard: Fall 1152
by David Petersen
(Graphic Novel)
I keep noticing Mouse Guard when I go to the comic book store (with its original size & shape and it's gorgeous bold colors, it's difficult to miss). I finally got the first volume out of the library and since it's due in a few days, I finally got around to reading it.
LOVED it! Thought I would, but now I'm sure I did :-) It reminded me of some highly artistic picture books from my childhood... only the story was engaving and clever in addition to having gorgeous art.
I love the concept of mice having their own world- and not some fluffy fun world behind the walls of human buildings, but a whole universe and civilization completely separate from humans. Something independant and sustainable that they build and protect. I love the insight into their world and culture. But I also love the kind of world it is. It's not thimbles and pulleys, it's swords and caps, maps and adventures.
The characters are more than just brave little mice- their 3-dimensional warriors with great personalities. Gwendolyn, Sadie, Saxon, Kenzie, and Lieam. I think Lieam's my favorite. I like the young, loyal, tortured kind *G* I love the way they talk (awww, Redfur!) though it's easy to jump right in. And it's hard not to cheer for the guard.
It's clear this is a series of comics, but they still read beautifully when they're together in a set like this. There's a lovely little opening with sort of teaser (I guess) and mouse guard wisdom. And each story has its own little rise and fall- pieces of the puzzle being uncovered and battles that need to be fought. But in each story we learn more and see more and the culmination is fantastic! It's beautifully told and just as beautifully illustrated. I look forward to winter when Winter 1152 is out in hardcover!
This volume (being the first) also contains a note from the author, maps of the places we have seen in this volume, little bits about the town (different roles of mice, town layout, etc.), and pinups which feature some gorgeous art! Quite a fantastic set of extras.
