Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale
by Zack Whedon, Joss Whedon, Chris Samnee and Dave Stewart
I've been waiting a long, long time for Book's backstory. I had a chance to read this during my Do Nothing But Read Day (1/29/12).
I really adore non-linear/creative storytelling, so starting with the Shepard we know (with scenes we're familiar with) and moving back to the beginning was a fantastic idea. Just when I thought I'd gotten the measure of him, the next section would flip that upside-down or bring in a new reason or element. The transitions were done beautifully, and the story itself impressed me (thank you, Joss, for creating such amazingly complex characters). I really liked how elements like his thoughtfulness and observations about humanity were present even when he was young, even if he didn't realize at the time what those ideas would mean for him later.
