The Hidden Past (Star Wars: Jedi Apprentice, Book 3)
by Jude Watson
Once again, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon set out on a mission and are side-tracked with something noble and important that could use Jedi intervention. I'm hoping one of these days I'll get to see a story in which they're given a mission and they actually manage to carry it out. In this story, Obi-Wan's interesting but charmingly annoying friend from book 2 shows up again in this book, bringing with him his whole family. There's also a brainwashing device being used by a great power--a danger Obi-Wan suddenly finds himself facing.
I must admit the story was a little blah for me apart from a few scenes, mostly because it seemed like just killing time to make the story long enough to justify the ending climax scene and battle. Once the story got going and the danger became very real, I definitely enjoyed it more. I loved Obi-Wan's inner thoughts as he's terrified of having his mind erased. He's terrified of the inevitable situation where he'll lose his identity, all his Jedi training, and his bond with Qui-Gon--what a terrible thing to go through. I loved Qui-Gon's reaction when Obi-Wan is separated from him, so wounded, even though they're still newly Master and Padawan at this point in the series. And I loved finally understanding the significance of the stone. It has shown up in several fanfics I've read and it was wonderful seeing it in "canon" here and understand what it means to both Obi and Qui. Also, the moments where the Jedi kick some ass and save the day--I will never tire of seeing that from Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon.
