Marvel Adventures (Fantastic Four): All 4 One, 4 for All
by Zeb Wells & Kano with Alvaro Lopez
This is Volume 5 in this series from Marvel, but all the stories are standalones. In fact, this is a collection of Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four #17-20 and, beautifully, it contains one story that centers around each of the four members of the Fantastic Four. I thought that was great balance, and it was enjoyable seeing each member doing their own thing on their own.
The Thing- This was a slightly heartbreaking story. I love that for someone made out of rock, Ben has such vulnerability and a sensitive side. This was a great exploration of his strengths and weaknesses and really did him justice.
The Invisible Girl- I prefer calling her the Invisible Woman, but at any rate, this is a great story where Sue feels unappreciated by the rest of the team and ends up being recruited as a S.H.I.E.L.D. special agent by Nick Fury himself. She kicks some serious butt all over the world. But when faced with the possibility of making it a fulltime gig and leaving the team, she realizes she's needed after all. Cue the "awwwww."
Mr. Fantastic- Reed is so caught up with scientific perfection that he overlooks important things like human emotion. In an attempt to logically fix this about himself, he heads into a carnival's fun house, which is designed to break him. He cleverly overcomes each problem and everyone learns valuable lessons.
The Human Torch- Johnny and Bobby together; I kind of love the rivalry and the way they are forced to team up. And though nothing really blew my mind here (Johnny judging a teen beauty pagent? That's SO in character) it was fun to watch their interactions.
In general, each story shows the character's strengths and weaknesses and lets them grow and change just a little. A perfect combination of stories. The artwork is great and consistent throughout. Definitely a fun, enjoyable read.
