Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls
by David Sedaris

I'm a sucker for a good Sedaris essay. And this book was packed full of them. There were also some short stories at the end that I didn't like all that much. His best humor is definitely in his essays--the absurdity and truth and humor in real events. Fictional ones, while somewhat funny at times, just don't have the same impact.
Anyway, this collection of essays is back to what Sedaris does best. I cracked up a number of times. Everything from imagining fates for littering in England to the differences between foreign language lesson CDs for Japanese and German, from an anatomical model of a human throat to the food in China, from his father's obsession with some other kid to baby sea turtles... okay, the sea turtle thing made me a little sad, but the rest is simply hilarious. The foreign language bits made me thing of Me Talk Pretty One Day and made me laugh almost as much. I was nearly crying with laughter at times, which required me to pull over or sit in my car long after I'd reached my destination.
I had my first ever colonoscopy last month, so I could relate to the chapter about his fist colonoscopy. Great timing. I didn't get happy drugs like he did, but otherwise, I was impressed by how he could make such a thing so damn funny!
The only thing I didn't like was how quickly I made it through the book. I would have loved for it to have been longer!
I'm flying out to Seattle on Monday; I will be paying specific attention to how the stewardesses collect the trash at the end of the flight...
