The Good Neighbors: Kin (book one)
by Holly Black
Rue's world is getting better. She knows what she is now--part faerie-- and people in that world are communicating with her, letting her know what's going on. Even better: her mom returns! Things are starting to look up!
Just kidding. Her boyfriend is changing and wants nothing to do with her (and everything to do with water nymphs eating him alive). The mother who returns doesn't act like herself. And her mother's father only wants to take over the whole world by getting rid of humanity. Oh dear.
In this book, we find Rue learning more and exploring more of the new-to-her dark world. We also see her start to realize that being half-faerie comes with a benefit or two.
I didn't mention it in the first book's review, but I really like the art. It's dark and distinctive. Not only is the fantastic beautifully depicted and realistic, but the "real" world I'm familiar with is drawn well (like the band's concert).
