Ultimate Spider-Man Volume 11: Carnage
by Brian Michael Bendis, others
I bought this at a used book sale a few years ago and just found it on my bookshelf the other day out of the blue. I snagged it and stuck it in a box to go to my new house so I could read it immediately. This month, I sort of ODed on Spider-man, not a superhero I followed in-depth apart from occasionally reading the comic strip in the newspaper as a kid. But this month I bought 10 issues of Marvel Adventures Spider-Man at a library used book sale and then marathoned the Ultimate Spider-man tv show on Netflix. So this definitely came at the right time.
I loved this book! It's a collection of Ultimate Spider-Man #60-65 and it's Bendis. Man, I love Bendis' writing. He threw out several of my favorite personal situations (I'm such a lover of hurt/comfort). In this story arc, Peter lets Dr. Conners play with his DNA. Which sent red flags up for me. But for Peter, who's not at his best when he's asked anyway, all the boy can think of are the benefits. Maybe his blood will help cure cancer? Ha! When did that sort of thing ever happen in the Marvel universe--any Marvel universe? Instead, something like Venom is created, comes to life, and then starts sucking the life out of people. Oops!
This volume is packet with hurt and angst and tragedy--all the stuff that makes Spider-Man good. I love Peter trying to find his place in the world amidst all this. Peter fights because he wants to save people; that's what I love about him. But sometimes his efforts fall short and he beats himself up for it. Poor Pete.
