Deceptions (Star Wars: Jedi Apprentice Special Edition 1)
by Jude Watson
This book is set earlier in the series, shortly after the mess with Bruck and Xanatos. I enjoyed those storyarcs more than some of the later stories, so it was great to jump back into a time and place for my two Jedis that I liked.
This special edition contained two related stories, one with Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon dealing with Bruck's death and Bruck's family putting the blame on Obi-Wan in a formal court setting. It was filled with a lot of master-padawan relationship moments as well as some moments with Bant that I loved. It was great seeing Obi-Wan dealing with what happened, facing his emotions and guilt and not turning dark because of them.
The other story involved Obi-Wan and Anakin, set just a few years after the first movie but before the second movie (so it was confusing when there was mention of Ani's mother's death... which wouldn't have happened yet). It was wonderful to get a look inside Obi-Wan's mind as a master, who wants the best for his padawan and wants to help shape Ani the way his master helped shape him. But Obi is also able to see more in Ani--the fact that he doesn't fit in, his brilliance as a pilot, etc.
The two stories are connected through Bruck's family, who shows up in the first as the antagonists and in the second, surprisingly, as saviors to many (or so it seems). It was a nice reminder that people can change over time. it was also great to see Obi-Wan's past coming into play in many different ways throughout the mission, and Ani getting to learn so much more about his master.
I truly enjoyed this book, more than most in the series. I would read it again.
