The Bane Chronicles, Volume 1: What Really Happened in Peru
by Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan

(Audio)

Magnus Bane is easily my favorite character of Cassandra Clare's. I think she probably knows he's her best character, too, and I'm glad for that because this series came from the great love many of us have for him. As a Warlock, he's lived for many years and has had many interesting adventures/run-ins/relationships. Several of his Peru-related incidents are described in this short story.

Magnus is banned from Peru. Why? You have to read the book! It starts out with a geat story, and it was wonderful to see some other familiar faces in this one as well. But at the end of it we get the statement that that wasn't why he was banned from Peru. And another story begins. Story after story follow, each more amusing than the one before. Mangus' character is such that you can believe he could really get into just about anything--from escaping from pirates to learning a musical instrument to attract a certain young man's attention. Magnus' respect for humans comes through crystal clear, even if the particulars change over the years for him. I loved his observations about humanity as well as learning more about his parents. But the thing I loved most was the humor. Magus' wit is unparalleled and addictive, and it's in all its glory in his own stories here. As an example, I will leave you with my favorite line from the book: "Continue applying the guinea pig."

I can't wait to read more in this series. I almost started this book over the second I finished it. The reader is perfect, able to bring the humor and irony as well as the heartfelt emotion and passion as well. I'm so glad I earread this!
