Books + Fandom = Yes Please!

This month, I went to see Star Wars/Star Trek author John Jackson Miller speak. I was waitlisted for the event because so many people wanted to attend. So it was moved to an elementary school nearby, which meant sitting sideways in weirdly uncomfortable seats meant for children, but the event was great. Lots of people were in costume, and a couple members of the 501st were in attendance, which of course I got NO good photos of because I'm shy. But here are some links on the interwebs:

He talked a lot about the books he has written and what it was like to write in some of the big franchises (in other people's worlds). And he talked about writing Star Wars graphic novels, which I think was especially great for kids to hear (so much work goes into a graphic novel, and it's neat to see the guy behind the characters and stories). The talk was pretty quick, but he did a nice Q&A afterward, which was mostly answering a lot of questions like "who's your favorite Jedi?"
I didn't win anything in the raffle (no surprise) but lots of the kids did, so that was good. And it was neat seeing all the parents getting into it just as much as the kids. I love that events like this validate fandom tie-in novels. Some of them are REALLY well written. I had him sign my copy of Kenobi and talked with him briefly about Shore Leave, as he was going to be on some panels there. He was a great guy and seemed to have a lot of fun talking to us all about his work. We were definitely happy he took some time to talk with us!
