Ultimate Spider-Man #2: Learning Curve
by Brian Michael Bendis & others
Struggle. Where would superheroes be without the struggle? New to his powers, Peter tries to keep hold of everything here... but he keeps going up against enemies he really can't handle yet. He might be smart and clever for his age, he might have spider powers, he might have a brand new job at the paper, he might finally be getting somewhere with Mary Jane, but he is NOWHERE ready to face off against the Kingpin. Not even close. Unfortunately, he finds that out in this volume when the Kingpin ends up with Spidey's mask. Oops. Rookie mistake.
He's also having a hard time lying to the people in his life. And then there's dealing with the death of his Uncle. And the attack on the school. So what does he end up doing? He ends up TELLING MARY JANE! I didn't see that coming so early in the series, but I'm glad he has someone to confide in now. And the last image of the volume, Peter with that sappy grin on his face, is very happy-making.
I can't quite get used to Mary Jane being called Mary all the time. But otherwise, I'm digging this series. On to volume 3!
