A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1)
by George R.R. Martin

(Audio)

I know a lot of people rave about this series. I watched the first season of the series and didn't really like it. I couldn't keep characters straight. Stories seemed hurried and twists came out of nowhere. So I was hesitant to read this book when my HP meetup group scheduled it for a meetup, but I gave it a try. I actually liked it more than the series, because it was a lot easier to keep characters straight and the motivations of characters were a lot clearer. There was more time to develop stories. I did find myself really liking some of the characters, but there weren't that many good guys for me to like. There were a heck of a lot of terrible characters, though.

I liked many of the different elements and loved the worldbuilding. I also thought George R. R. Martin did an excellent job of descriptions. Some of his word choices were amazing, especially duiring some of the high action scenes, which are hard for me personally to write. I thought the writing was strong and many of the sentences were quite beautiful.

I enjoyed the twists and turns (much more than I did while watching the series), but I can't say I really loved the book. I'm kind of lukewarm about it. I wouldn't mind reading more of the series, but I'm not that interested in seeking it out at this point.
