Wow. I can't possibly praise this series enough. Book 2 ended with such a terrible event that I was so worried about what was in store for my beloved characters in book 3! There were times, especially early on in the book, where I could not imagine how the characters could make it out of the situation they found themselves in. This looked AWFUL... and then got worse and more complicated throughout.
Brilliant story crafter that Funke is, the story kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time, brought me to tears more than once, and had me scream right out loud on at least one occasion... yet it ended so beautifully, so perfectly, that it left me wanting nothing more.
The only thing I didn't like was that the audio books are each narrated by a different person. I loved Brendon Fraiser's narration so much and wish he'd done all three so character voices could be consistent. Not that the other two weren't great... it's just I heard his first and fell in love with the characters that way, so I wanted that throughout.
What an amazing journey to go on through three long books. The fact that books are so appreciated by the characters is a joy. Books cause happiness and complications. They're used as tools and for reading enjoyment. Their stories and words are dissected and pulled apart, then woven back together again into something so magical and irresistible. You constantly question what's real and what's possible... until you realize that fiction is just as real as our world and ANYTHING is possible, cheesy as it sounds.
So amazing... so wonderful... I can't wait to re-read them all!
