Star Trek: Countdown
by J. J. Abrams, Robert Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Tim Jones, Mike Johnson, David Messina

(Graphic novel)

I read this in one sitting, borrowed from a friend. I read it after seeing the movie, so I went in with the viewpoint of knowing what came before and after in the storyline. I was a little skeptical going in, but I thought it actually did an excellent job of tying the current timeline and the reboot; I hadn't expected it to work so well.

There were a lot of moments I was very glad to see. I especially liked the shaving & painting of heads as part of the Romulan grieving process. I liked a lot of the quiet moments, with character interaction and time to really reflect about what was happening (something you don't have time to sit back and do when watching a movie nonstop). And it was spectacular to see my Next Generation crew there as part of the mix. I was less thrilled (and kind of shocked) when one of them was horribly murdered but now that we're in an alternate timeline, it'll be quite interesting to see what happens. So many fun things for writers to play with.

The art was gorgeous. I'm picky sometimes when it comes to character art of such well-known characters (like Spock) and I was quite pleased with the art here. And even though there were many people writing, drawing, and coloring, it was consistent enough throughout that I was never once thrown from issue/chapter to issue/chapter. It all worked together seamlessly to fill in blanks and expand my understanding of events. Not to mention the fact that it was an enjoyable read in a universe I love :-)
