An Abundance of Katherines
by John Green
(Audio)
I guess for me, with John Green, there's Looking for Alaska and then there's everything else. This is not to say I dislike all his other works. It's just that Alaska was SO amazing and special it's going to take a fuggin' miracle to get better than that book.
This one was highly enjoyable. The only major problem I had with it was that it wasn't in first person, like his other two books. I love his intimate first person style and frequently I forget that this wasn't like that and then "he" was stuck in there and it made my head spin around until I remembered it's third person. And it's not to say we don't get to see what's in Colin's head, because we do follow him exclusively, omnisciently. But it just threw me, that's all.
Like John's other books, I LOVED the characters. They're realistic and clever and so so so so so much fun! This was the most predictable of all 3 books, yet I was still on the edge of my seat during it.
The concepts and characters are bizarre but somehow they all seem to make perfect sense. I adore the ideas. Once you accept that a boy (prodigy) could possibly have dated 19 different Katherines, the whole book makes sense. This description from Amazon sums it up well:
"Colin is on a mission to prove The Theorem of Underlying Katherine Predictability, which he hopes will predict the future of any relationship, avenge Dumpees everywhere, and finally win him the girl. Love, friendship, and a dead Austro-Hungarian archduke add up to surprising and heart-changing conclusions in this ingeniously layered comic novel about reinventing oneself."
I'm definitely glad I read this and am looking forward to even more John Green goodness. I can't get enough!
