Honey... Honey... Lion!
by Jan Brett
The honey badger on the cover of the book caught my attention while I was looking for missing books in the library during my volunteer shift one evening. I recognized the author as the author of The Mitten, which I loved when I was young. But this book... I didn't love it so much.
The illustrations are certainly gorgeous and the story does a great job of showing so many different animals and locations in Africa. And I thought the different animal sounds the badger encountered on his journey following the bird to the honey were lovely.
However, I was not a fan of out stupid and self-centered the badger was made out to be! Sure, he deserved what he got for taking advantage of the bird and not sharing... but I like my badgers to be the sharing and friendly kind. I didn't like how stupid this one was. Of course, if he hadn't been, there would be no plot. And a plot based on a good symbiotic relationship like this is good. It just hurt to see my dear badger being mean.
