Grandma's Cat
by Helen Ketteman
This book passed through my hands while I was doing the picklist Saturday morning last week. It looked adorable, so I sat down and read it. Turns out, it IS adorable!
The main character is a young girl who visits her grandmother. The cat is less than excited about that fact because the girl chases it and grabs at it. The cat, of course, swipes at her and scratches her nose. The grandmother explains how to treat cats and the girl lets it come to her and pets it properly. Even better, she feeds it treats and picks burrs out of its fur. It's a happy friendship at the end.
The illustrations are soft and sweet. But what makes this picture book so charming is that the entire book is told in rhyming verse.
is round and fat.
He hides. I seek.
He scoots. I peek.
Having met children like the little girl and cats like the sweet little fuzzball in this story, the book certainly rang true and warmed my heart.
