"Bea says that the art of reading is slowly dying, that it's an intimate ritual, that a book is a mirror that offers us only what we already carry inside us, that when we read, we do it with all our heart and mind, and great readers are becoming more scarce by the day."
~Carlos Ruiz Zafón

The Shadow of the Wind was probably the best book I read last year. I wish I'd had a copy then so I could have made notes of passages while earreading it. Guess I'll just have to re-read it now that I have a hard copy. It's packed full of great quotes like this and I wanted to be sure to make note of this one.

"[D:]on't ever apologize to an author for buying something in paperback, or taking it out from a library (that's what they're there for. Use your library). Don't apologize to this author for buying books second hand, or getting them from bookcrossing or borrowing a friend's copy. What's important to me is that people read the books and enjoy them, and that, at some point in there, the book was bought by someone. And that people who like things, tell other people. I was really impressed with some of the things he had to say about reading in general when I saw him at the National Book Festival, as well. Specifically, I loved that he really appreciates audio books-- that it's a different kind of reading experience, not a lazy option. Last night I picked up a copy of his newest Graveyard Book at the library on audio, read by him! (I am always fascinated to hear authors read their own stories, even if they're not spectacular readers, because you get to hear how they envisioned tones and pace). I'm really looking forward to starting it Monday. And if I end up liking it (I seem to be hit or miss with the man's works) I'll probably buy my own copy.
