Quote: Neil Gaiman

"[D:]on't ever apologize to an author for buying something in paperback, or taking it out from a library (that's what they're there for. Use your library). Don't apologize to this author for buying books second hand, or getting them from bookcrossing or borrowing a friend's copy. What's important to me is that people read the books and enjoy them, and that, at some point in there, the book was bought by someone. And that people who like things, tell other people. The most important thing is that people read... "

I was really impressed with some of the things he had to say about reading in general when I saw him at the National Book Festival, as well. Specifically, I loved that he really appreciates audio books-- that it's a different kind of reading experience, not a lazy option. Last night I picked up a copy of his newest Graveyard Book at the library on audio, read by him! (I am always fascinated to hear authors read their own stories, even if they're not spectacular readers, because you get to hear how they envisioned tones and pace). I'm really looking forward to starting it Monday. And if I end up liking it (I seem to be hit or miss with the man's works) I'll probably buy my own copy.

As far as I know, Gaiman narrates all his books, and he's one of the few authors who's absolutely fantastic at it.

He talked about that at the National Book Festival, too. He said he loves reading his books because he enjoys the medium. He didn't narrate Anansi Boys but that was his decision- apparently he didn't trust himself to do some of the voices (like the three different old women with Cajun accents). Personally, I really didn't care for Anansi Boys or the narration but apparently Neil loved it. And it's his book, so who am I to say anything? LOL
