This is the first time in a while I wasn't able to go to the first day (or the last day) of a book sale. But I went today after my volunteering shift at the library and got some goodies:

  • De-Lovely (DVD; because John Barrowman is in it)

  • A Tolkien Bestiary (hardcover; I'll probably keep this and get rid of my other copy)

  • Kim Possible Vol 1 (Graphic Novel- awwww!)

  • Juvenie Orion Vol 1 (Manga; the boys reminded me of my Weiss Boys)

  • InuYasha Vol 18 (Manga; I can never remember which volumes I have. Looks like I don't have vol 18 already)

  • Star Wars: Jango Fett (Graphic novel)

  • Ultimate Fantastic Four Issue 1 (comic)

  • Ultimate Fantastic Four Issue 2 (comic)

  • Ultimate Fantastic Four Issue 6 (comic)

  • Lost by Gregory Maguire (Oversized paperback)

  • Choose Your Own Adventure: Search for the Mountain Gorillas (BookCrossing convention)

  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (for Accio Books 2011)

  • Quidditch Through the Ages (for Accio Books 2011)

That's 33 things for $32. Not too bad, considering 1 was a DVD and a few were hardcovers. That "qualified" me for a free Tom Clancy book as well. And on my way out of the library, I grabbed a few books from the trash bin, saving them from being recycled. So really it's more like 40 for $32. Am I geek for buying so many Harry Potter books more than 8 months away from Accio Books? Quite possibly!

Book Sale

katekintailbc: (Bookworm Remus)
Last week I went to a book sale. I got there early enough to be among the first few handful through the door but it looks like a staff member or volunteer got to the 3 Choose Your Own Adventure books I had my eye on before me. Doh! I still came out with some useful awesomeness for my trouble:

katekintailbc: (Bookworm Remus)
It's Accio Books month at the Harry Potter Alliance. And that means that I am scrambling to get as many books as possible to donate to charity. I have an awful feeling that Hufflepuff House will lose *again* but a girl can dream and I'm going to work as hard as humanly possible to help them win. And that means buying books. And, if able, Harry Potter books. I already mailed 14 Harry Potter books to the Mississippi Delta region along with 107 other books. And it looks like I might need another 2 boxes still to send the ones I just bought.

I went to the Fairfax City Library book sale for the first time yesterday (took off 2 hours of work, because I work just down the street from the library). I got there at 8:50 and doors opened at 10. I was maybe the 10th or 15th in line.

I bought some of my favorite books to send to the Mississippi Delta:
  • Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician's Nephew

  • The House at Pooh Corner

  • Ella Enchanted

  • From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler

  • The Outsiders

  • A Separate Peace

  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

I bought these Harry Potter books:
  • Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone (paperback)

  • Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone (paperback)

  • Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets (hardcover)

  • Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets (paperback)

  • Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets (paperback)

  • Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban (hardcover)

  • Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban (hardcover)

  • Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix (hardcover)

  • Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix (hardcover)

  • Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows (hardcover)

  • Quidditch Through the Ages

And I bought:
  • Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures Vol 1 (for myself; I don't think I have it already)

  • Look Out, Washington, D.C. (for the BC Convention)

  • And 2 books that are for BookCrossers who have done a lot to help [livejournal.com profile] melydia & [livejournal.com profile] thecrrcookie get to Amsterdam

All that for $20! Amazing! I really liked the book sale. High quality book, really nice people, and lots more space to move about than in other places. Or maybe I'm just so used to being cramped. LOL But, yeah, I'll definitely go back.

I checked the Pohick Library sale shelves and bought...
6 Choose Your Own Adventure books
For $3

And then I went to the children's book sale at Reston Library for the first time. The prices were a little high, and lots of what I wanted was specially priced to be much higher. I liked that the poster specifically mentioned Harry Potter books though. LOL I bought a bunch of stuff, some of which I'm definitely keeping!
  • Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone (paperback)

  • Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone (paperback)

  • Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone (paperback)

  • Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone (audio on cassette tape)

  • Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets (paperback)

  • Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets (paperback)

  • Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets (paperback)

  • Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets (paperback)

  • Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire (paperback)

  • Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix (hardcover 1st Edition)

  • Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince (paperback)

  • Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince (hardcover)

  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

  • Quidditch Through the Ages

  • Tales of Beedle the Bard

  • Choose Your Own Adventure: Cave of Time (for the BC Convention)

  • Look Out, Washington, D.C. (for the BC Convention)

  • The Bro Code (Squee! LOL Totally mine!)

  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Deluxe Pop-up Book (Mine! I LOVE this! *enjoys*)

  • Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets (paperback in French. Keeping this.)

  • X/1999 Volume 11 (I only had up to Volume 10)

  • X/1999 Volume 12 (I only had up to Volume 10)

And that was $48. Kind of expensive for 23 books but I got some awesome ones for myself, a much-needed Choose Your Own Adventure, and a lot of really high quality Harry Potter books. I left behind about 5-8 hardcover Harry Potter books which were first editions and going for $5 each.

I'm going to hit the Fairfax City bag sale and possibly one other book sale tomorrow.
katekintailbc: (Bookworm Remus)
For the first time in years, I missed day 1 of one of the two local book sales. I was just too busy at work to take off work for the book sale. I'm kind of regretting it because pickings were slim on Day 2, but I still walked away with $29 of goodies. I had hoped to go to the bag sale today, but the libraries were closed because of the snow.

So I bought:
  • Choose Your Own Adventure: Space Patrol (Reserved for BookCrossing)

  • Wishful Drinking (Unabridged Audiobook on CD)

  • Atonement (Unabridged Audiobook on CD)

  • InuYasha Volume 5 (Graphic Novel)

  • InuYasha Volume 12 (Graphic Novel)

  • InuYasha Volume 16 (Graphic Novel)

  • InuYasha Volume 20 (Graphic Novel)

  • A Series of Unfortunate Events Book 6: The Ersatz Elevator (hardcover; I have a less-nice version of this so I'll replace it with this one)

  • The Plain James (Graphic Novel)

  • Stargate Atlantis: Entanglement (SQUEE!)

  • Buffy: Spike & Dru- Pretty Maids All in a Row (Another SQUEEEE!)

  • Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal (I couldn't resist Harry Potter, even in another language)

  • Stargate Atlantis: Season 2 (DVD)

So, yeah, not much, but season 2 of Stargate Atlantis thrilled me (they had half of season 1 as well but I didn't want just half a season). And I couldn't remember which InuYashas I had/had read so I bought all the ones there. LOL
katekintailbc: (Bookworm Remus)

katekintailbc: (Bookworm Remus)
This year, I'm only going to be able to make it to the first day of each book sale. So no awesome bag sales to bring the price-per-book down. Still, I get awesome books first time out.

I am really, really, really, really happy with my purchases for this book sale.
katekintailbc: (Default)
The last afternoon is the afternoon of the bag sale. I was thoroughly disappointed this time. They included media, which was great, but NO paperback fiction from the other room. Every year in the past, they've included it. Why did they stop this year? So I only filled one bag. I saw a few books on my way out I wanted but I didn't want them bad enough to pay another $5 (used to be $3 a bag). I figured since I'm going to the Book Thing this month, there was no need to pay more for books I didn't really want or need.

41 books (12 of them audio books) for $5.

So the total for the book-buying this weekend is:
117 books for $117.50. So about a dollar a book. Which is really bad, percentage-wise. But considering quite a few were audio books and books off my wish list I might have bought at full price anyway, it's actually a pretty good outcome. If I could go to the book sale #2 bag sale I'd TOTALLY clean up. Especially since kids books are included in that one as well as fiction. But for all the limitations this year, not too bad in the end. I'm happy with my new books.
katekintailbc: (Bookworm Remus)

  • Stargate: The Ark of Truth (DVD. OMG OMG OMG!)

Seriously an amazing trip. The last 4 on the list were on various wishlists of mine. I'm SO excited about so many of these. I feel SO lucky to have acquired them :-) I passed up a few things (like a volume 1 omnibus of Maupin's 28 Barbary Lane which I DON'T need because I have all of the beginning of the series on Mt. TBR already). I was just getting ready to leave and walking past the table by the door when I saw the copy of Boy Culture. I gasped out loud (not very loud--not loud enough to be a squee-- but definitely loud enough). The woman coming up next to me laughed and said something like "something special?" I told her it was on a wish list of mine and I'd been dying to read it. She said it was great to see someone so excited and great to know there were still gems of books hidden in the sale (which had only been going on an hour and a half at that point). The only thing that would have made it perfect was if I'd found an oversided paperback edition of Flying Colors to match my existing set. But otherwise, it was fantastic. And there was a huge manga selection this time around (missing from the sale yesterday) but it was all for really young kids. Maybe I shouldn't have passed up the Inuyasha books, but oh well. Did I mention I got a STARGATE MOVIE DVD????!!

33 books for $42.50. Definitely, definitely awesome for what I bought.
katekintailbc: (Bookworm Remus)
I took off work today and went to my local library book sale. Not a great selection this year, and I bought too many "expensive" nonfiction books. But not too bad because I found a few books on my wish list!

  • The City of Ember (Oversized paperback. I'm earreading this now at work. Loving it and now I have my own copy!)

  • Neverwhere (lovely, almost perfect paperback edition!)

  • The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer: My Life at Rose Red (I've been wanting to read this for YEARS! SQUEE!)

  • Peter Puck: Love That Hockey Game! (oldtime Hanna-Barbera cartoon book)

  • Open Net (hardcover) Was on my wish list!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The Dr Who Annual (Hardcover. From 1965. And SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE!)

So I bought 28 books for $61. Not that great, but I was going for quality over quantity today. It was the $13 of audio books that killed me. But they're all such lovely books-- how did I live without them before? heehee I'm SO excited about Rose Red & Open Net, both of which were on various Wish Lists of mine. And the Star Wars graphic novel was an especially cool find. I was over the moon about the Dr Who Annual, though. I have the first story already in pdf because they released it on one of the DVDs of season 2 or 3 episodes (the Zarbi storyline). It was so great to see it in the original volume and now there are a bunch of other stories to read, too! Totally rocks my world :-)

EDIT:
Meep! I forgot 4 other books I bought there!
  • Choose Your Own Adventure #4: Space and Beyond (I'll be keeping this because I don't have it already)

  • Choose Your Own Adventure #20: Escape (For the BookCrossing Convention)

  • Choose Your Own Adventure #62: Sugarcane Island (For the BookCrossing Convention)

  • Choose Your Own Adventure #123: Silver Wings (For the BookCrossing Convention)

So 32 for $61.
katekintailbc: (Bookworm Remus)
The end of the library book sales! I woke up early-ish (for me) and got to the library before 11 (doors open at 12). I did a lot of writing for NaNoWriMo while waiting. I ended up being second in line, one behind a cardboard box someone had put there (probably last night) as a placeholder. So I consider myself to technically be the first person in line. heehee

Book Sale #2: Day 3--
  • 2 audio books on CD

  • 6 audio books on cassette (could have picked up more but the area was swamped and nothing else jumped out at me)

  • 78 other books (about 8 hardcovers, and the rest paperbacks of various sizes)

A total of 86 books for $10. Again, not bad. It was the hardcovers that made it impossible to get 100, but still 86 is pretty good for filling 2 paper bags. I'll be BookCrossing with most of them. (Though a few are for my personal collection)

But still... STILL no books with January or February in the title. Boo hiss. Got a July yesterday, though. So now I think I just need January, February, and November. (Though I might have a November. I can't remember and the box is under another box right now so I can't check. I know for sure I have March, April, May, June, July, August, Sept, Oct, and Dec).

Anyway, so here's my stats for the whole of the book sales:
Total books purchased: 286
Total amount spent: $126
Total amount per book: $0.44

Now I just have to finish my NaNoWriMo novel and get to work registering these guys! heehee!
katekintailbc: (Bookworm Remus)
Book Sale #1: Day 3--
  • 1 book (hardcover, gift for Dad)

  • 2 audio books on CD

  • 16 audio books on cassette tape

  • 93 other books

So... 112 books for $15. Not too bad. In that 112 there's maybe 1 or 2 for Mount TBR and all the others are for BookCrossing. Boy, as soon as NaNoWriMo is over, I'm going to have to register my head off!
katekintailbc: (Bookworm Remus)
Book Sale #2: Day 1--

  • Doctor Who: The Art of Destruction (Hardcover. Special Doctor Who SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!)

47 books for $71. Not nearly as good as yesterday, but the $5 and $3 audio books are mostly to blame. Still, quality graphic novels for only $1 each? You have NO idea how much manga was there. There's never been so much before at a library sale. I showed amazing self-restraint in my choices, especially when it came to manga and audio books. There was SO much I was tempted by, but only chose what I was really excited in. And, actually, I'm terribly happy with my choices. So many great books to add to my collection and love forever. I'm really thrilled. *hugs all my new books* I will probably BookCross with a lot of the GNs when I'm done reading them, way down the road. But... seriously... I'm running out of bookshelf room! Oh no!!! I really must read faster!
katekintailbc: (Bookworm Remus)
On another of my LJs I usually make a list of all the books I've bought at the two major book sales I go to each year. I figure now that I have a book-related LJ, it's more appropriate to list all that here :-)

I kept running into books that I'd just read through BookCrossing rings and since no one else wanted them at the sale, I shall take them, register them with my comments, and set them free again.

Book Sale #1: Day 1-

  • What Will Happen in Harry Potter 7 (Oversized paperback. Everyone else seems to have a copy)

  • Empire Building: The Remarkable Real Life Story of Star Wars (Neato!)

So, by my count, that's 41 books for only $30. And more than a handful of those were audio books, and the rest were mostly hardcovers or oversized paperbacks. Seriously, at less than $1 each, for this lot, that totally makes my day!

Looking forward to Day 1 of the other library sale tomorrow morning. And, of course, the bag sales on Saturday and Sunday where I'll get bunches of books for BookCrossing. First day books are usually all for me me me but it was a nice balance this time :-) Though I'm definitely excited about the Fantastic Five GN and the HP books.
